The Heros Journey:

Ending a Sentence with a Preposition

You must never end a sentence with a preposition! How often did you hear this in school? I have good news: you can end a sentence any way you choose to. Ending sentences with prepositions is something I looked into. Thoroughly.

Let's define a preposition. It's a connective word that shows the relationship (in terms of time, space, cause, ownership, association, accompaniment, or manner) between a noun (or pronoun) and some other word in the sentence. Think "relationship," think "position," when you think "preposition."

Common Mistakes in Writing a Term Paper

Some term papers are designed and completed in two steps. First, you should present the draft of your paper to the tutor. Usually, your tutor makes acquaintance with it and can evaluate it as your term paper. Nevertheless, the writing of the draft is not a prerequisite, but nevertheless it might be advisable to complete it. It allows your tutor to correct some of the mistakes that you may have made. The second is the designing and completion of the dissertation.

Academia and Ghostwriting Dont Mix

Every time I look at the writing gigs listed on Craigslist, I see headlines like the following:

  • Publicity and Rewards For AMAZING Admission Essays and Personal Statements
  • Model Essay Writers Needed
  • Individuals Needed to Help Students Write and Edit Essays
  • Do You Love School and Writing?
  • Looking for help on writing essays for business school applications

And those are just the ones from the essay factories. The ads posted by students are even less subtle: Were you a straight-A student? or Write my college paper.

Is Ghostwriting Immoral?

Writing without a byline is a much more secure way to make a living than publishing in your own name. If fortune attracts you more than fame does, contract writing (which is writing on a particular subject without much input from your client) and ghostwriting (writing something in your clients "voice" and which their own friends couldnt tell wasnt their own) should definitely be part of your freelance writing repertoire.

Of course, you may face the question I occasionally get: "Ghostwriting? Is that, you know, ethical?"

Creating Real Novel Characters - Go To The Dark Places

One of the best writing talks I've ever heard was delivered by romance novelist Jennifer Cruisie at the Spring 2003 Writers Retreat Workshop. She gave the same talk again at the Romance Writers of America National Conference later that summer, and it was just as inspiring the second time around. She talked about going all-out in your writing. Digging deep. Living in your story. Bringing your characters to life. And she talked about something I'd never thought about before: going to the dark places.
